Regional Conservation Action Plan (ReCAP)

EcoLogic Solutions coordinates and unites individuals and groups around shared goals to ensure project plans are transparent, cohesive, and beneficial for all stakeholders. We organized and led the NYSDEC’s Region 2 Regional Conservation Action Plan (ReCAP) in response to the NYSDEC’s 10-year State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP), identifying and mitigating threats to Rare, Threatened, and Endangered Species.

The ReCAP recognizes that Region 2, NYC, is home to a group of threatened wildlife with unique recovery opportunities, including species that do not require conservation but are socially significant. This consists of the Eastern Coyote (Canis latrans) and North American Beaver (Castor canagensis). As a result, the program has proposed over fifty initiatives to address regional wildlife conservation objectives and has implemented several within the first few years, including:

  • Eastern Coyote (Canis latrans) movements study and development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for human-coyote interactions within New York CIty.
  • Study of Atlantic Coast Leopard Frog (Rana kauffeldii) populations and development of a conservation management plan for the species on Staten Island (Link)
  • Population study of the Short-Eared Owl (Asio flammeus) of an active landfill. Development and implementation of a conservation management plan on the landfill.
  • Management plans for Grassland bird habitats.
  • Rooftop nesting habitats for colonial nesting shorebirds.

This project includes participation from:

  • NYC Local, NY State, and Federal Governments
  • The NYC Audubon Society
  • The Nature Conservancy
  • American Museum of Natural History’s Gotham Coyote Project
  • American Littoral Society
  • National Marine Fisheries Service
  • NYC Department of Parks and Recreation
  • NYC Department of Sanitation

The ReCAP annual conference shares progress reports with stakeholders and the general public.
