Atlantic Coast Leopard Frog Population Dynamics Study & Management Plan
EcoLogic Solutions identifies areas where scientific research is needed to foster ecological knowledge and conservation goals, like with the Atlantic Coast Leopard Frog, where we obtain government grants assemble expert research teams.
The Atlantic Coast Leopard Frog (Rana kauffeldii) was a relatively unknown species when discovered in 2015 at a location in Staten Island designated as an NYC Harbor Dredge Spoil Beneficial Reuse Project. Dredge spoils were deposited within selected areas to make way for Amazon and IKEA warehouses, distribution centers, and other commercial development projects.
Funded by a US Fish and Wildlife Service, and representing the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, we used a grant to conduct a five-year intensive study of the species on the site and surrounding areas. Daisy Rivera took part in this assessment and study, which explored species population dynamics, movements, threats, and potentially suitable habitats discovering the potential for connecting habitat corridors to facilitate colonization of additional locations. In addition, the project included collaboration between government and non-profits, international corporations, and local real estate developers to incorporate a conservation management plan for the species into existing and upcoming planned development projects.
